In a performance that surprised absolutely nobody who has spent the last decade staring blankly at a television, the home team managed to drop a winnable game to Utah. Sergei Bobrovsky stood on his head with 33 saves but even he could not stop the inevitable. The first two periods were a lesson in how to be outshot by a significant margin as Utah controlled the flow and the shot clock. Jack Roslovic started the trip to the basement by taking a hooking penalty in the first period which led directly to a Dylan Guenther goal. It was a beautiful display of the defensive lapses that we have grown to know and tolerate.
Jack Roslovic tried to play the hero by netting two goals with help from Auston Matthews and Morgan Rielly. He even managed to tie the game in the third period which usually serves as a signal for the fans to start believing just enough to make the eventual loss hurt more. We actually dominated the shot clock in the third but naturally Darren Raddysh took a cross-checking penalty that gave Utah the opening they needed. Nick Schmaltz scored on that power play to seal our fate. We went zero for two on the power play while giving up two goals on three kills. It is truly impressive how we can make special teams look like such an impossible puzzle every single year.
