Only the Toronto Maple Leafs could get outshot thirteen to eight in the opening frame and somehow leave the ice with a lead. Jack Roslovic decided to be the hero early by scoring unassisted before heading to the box for tripping because he clearly felt the team needed a handicap against Edmonton. Anthony Stolarz was essentially the only reason the score remained respectable during that initial onslaught. The second period saw a surprising surge of competence where Auston Matthews and Troy Stecher scored goals less than a minute apart. Even Vinni Lettieri got into a scrap with Connor Murphy because nothing says Leafs hockey like a bottom six forward trying to prove he has grit while the stars actually do the scoring.
The final period was a strange fever dream where everything the team touched turned to gold. William Nylander notched a power play goal and an empty netter while Zack MacEwen literally batted a puck into the net like he was playing a different sport entirely. Leon Draisaitl tried his best to make things interesting with two goals for the home team but even Connor McDavid and his two assists could not save them from this occasional and confusing dominance. Seeing Vinni Lettieri cap off the scoring with his first of the season to make it seven to two was the icing on a very confusing cake. Everyone should probably enjoy this victory for exactly five minutes before the inevitable collapse returns to schedule.
