Another moral victory for the collection. This team managed to put up a staggering three shots in the opening period yet somehow took a lead thanks to Dakota Joshua. It was a bold strategy to see if we could win a game by never actually touching the puck. Joseph Woll spent his time facing 37 shots while the rest of the roster treated the defensive zone like it was an active construction site. Matias Maccelli managed to pick up two assists without recording a single shot on goal which is a level of commitment to passing that I almost have to respect.
The second period was a buffet of disappointment that only we could serve. Brandon Carlo took a four minute seat for high sticking and Jordan Staal made sure we paid for it. Then we decided to spice things up by giving up a goal on an Eric Robinson penalty shot and followed that by allowing a shorthanded goal to K'Andre Miller. It really takes a special kind of talent to surrender a penalty shot goal and a shorthanded goal in the same twenty minute span. John Tavares and William Nylander both scored to give us just enough hope to keep the television on which was the cruelest part of the entire experience.
Overtime lasted 41 seconds because Alexander Nikishin decided he had seen enough of our effort. Our power play went 0 for 2 and we spent 10 minutes in the penalty box because disciplined hockey is apparently against our core values. We managed to salvage a point in a game where we were outshot 37 to 26 and looked generally confused about the rules of the sport for long stretches. It was a classic performance that reminds everyone why we are the way we are.
