Losing at home to Buffalo is as much a part of the local culture as paying too much for a studio apartment. Matthew Knies opened the scoring and gave everyone a flicker of hope that things might actually be different for once. Auston Matthews even chipped in with his usual goal to make the score look respectable for a brief moment. Then Rasmus Dahlin decided to treat the ice like his personal playground and scored three times. It takes a special kind of talent to let a defenseman hang a hat trick on you while your own defense watches the play with polite interest.
Bobby McMann and Max Domi tried to provide some life throughout the struggle. Their efforts felt like trying to fix a sinking ship with a single piece of clear tape. The team managed a meager twenty four shots while allowing thirty into their own net. It is truly impressive how this group finds new ways to make seven goals against look like a deliberate artistic choice. We are all suckers for thinking a goal from Knies meant anything other than an inevitable collapse.
