vs Florida

4 - 1

In a shocking turn of events that definitely won't lead to mid-April heartbreak, the boys actually took care of business against Florida. Easton Cowan found the back of the net in the final minute of the first period, giving everyone just enough hope to be dangerous. It was a rare moment of competence that felt almost suspicious, like finding a twenty-dollar bill on the sidewalk right before stepping in a puddle.

The second period started with a flurry of goals from Matthew Knies and Auston Matthews, because apparently, the scriptwriters wanted to see if a 3-0 lead could actually be held for once. Naturally, Carter Verhaeghe decided to ruin the shutout bid midway through the third, triggering the collective PTSD of a fanbase that expects every multi-goal lead to evaporate like a Stanley Cup parade dream. Despite being outshot 32-23 and spending most of the final frame clinging to the lead like a life raft, Bobby McMann mercifully tucked an empty-netter away to secure a 4-1 win.

It’s a victory against a team that usually treats the Leafs like a personal punching bag, so everyone should try to stay calm. Winning games while being soundly outshot is a sustainable strategy for exactly zero teams, but logic has never really applied to this roster anyway. Enjoy the points, but keep the expectations in the basement where they belong. We’ve seen this movie before, and the ending usually involves a handshake line and a lot of redirected anger at the core four.
