William Nylander decided to earn his paycheck, sniping one past the Pens' goalie before most fans had even settled into their overpriced seats. Naturally, in true Blue and White fashion, the defensive core decided a narrow lead was plenty of time for a mid-game nap, allowing Bryan Rust to remind everyone why hope is a dangerous drug in this city. Matias Maccelli managed to restore some dignity before the first intermission, because heaven forbid we make things easy on our collective blood pressure.
Steven Lorentz padded the lead, but the inevitable "Leafs Experience" kicked in as Rutger McGroarty and Anthony Mantha clawed Pittsburgh back into a tie. Watching a multi-goal lead evaporate feels as familiar as a delayed subway line at Union Station, and despite being outshot 32-31, the panic was very much real. Just as the groaning reached a crescendo, Max Domi scored a clutch tie-breaker, followed by insurance from Bobby McMann and a second Willy Styles goal to seal the deal. It was a 6-3 win that looks much more comfortable on paper than it felt in our souls, so please, for the love of all things holy, do not start planning the parade route down Yonge Street just yet.
