Another game, another exercise in managed expectations. Things started in peak Toronto fashion when Morgan Frost put Calgary ahead early, forcing the home crowd to collectively sigh into their overpriced beers. Max Domi managed to find the back of the net in the second to even things up, but because this team thrives on making its fanbase suffer, they let Joel Farabee score with a minute left in the frame. Thankfully, Matthew Knies showed more heart than most of us have left, potting two straight goals to bridge the intermission and give us a lead that felt as fragile as a glass sculpture in a windstorm.
True to form, that lead didn't last. Samuel Honzek equalized late in the third, and I was already halfway through drafting a manifesto about why I’m switching my allegiance to professional curling. But then Domi popped up again at 17:56 with his second of the game to secure the 4-3 victory. We peppered them with 37 shots and actually managed to hold onto a lead for more than three minutes, which is a refreshing change of pace from the usual late-game collapses that haunt my dreams.
Look, a win is a win, and seeing Knies and Domi carry the heavy lifting is enough to make a person dangerously optimistic. But before anyone starts scouting parade routes down Bay Street, let's remember the logo on the front of the jersey. We beat Calgary at home in a nail-biter. It’s the kind of performance that builds exactly the right amount of false hope needed for a soul-crushing disappointment later down the line. I’ll take the points and the brief dopamine hit, but my therapist remains on speed dial.
