vs New York

2 - 1(OT)

Only the Maple Leafs could make a low-scoring defensive battle feel like a slow-motion car crash that we somehow walked away from without a scratch. Matthew Knies opened the scoring in the first period, giving the home crowd a dangerous sense of hope that the team might actually close one out in regulation for once. Naturally, the offense decided that twenty-four shots were more than enough for a full game’s work, allowing New York to hang around and dictate the pace. By the time Juuso Parssinen tied things up in the third, the collective sigh of resignation from the fans could be heard across the GTA. It was the classic Toronto experience: grab a lead, turtle for forty minutes, and pray the goaltender has better reflexes than our collective decision-making skills.

When the game limped into overtime, the script felt all too familiar, but Auston Matthews decided to remind everyone why he’s the primary reason for our annual cycle of delusion. He tucked one in less than a minute into the extra frame to secure the 2-1 win and spare us a stressful shootout. It’s a victory, sure, but getting outshot at home isn't exactly a reason to start booking parade routes along Bay Street. Let’s all agree to be cautiously optimistic for approximately ten minutes before we resume checking the standings and wondering how this team will inevitably find a way to break our hearts when the leaves actually start falling off the trees. It’s a win in the books, but we all know the real test is whether they can do this without giving us a localized heart murmur.
